BEST
CANDID

The purpose of this photo was to give the viewer a sense that the subject was immersed in her phone, and unaware of her surroundings. A candid shot must be taken when the subject is not posing, and therefore, the subject did not realize that the photo was taken. Taking a candid shot does not mean that the subject will look her worst. It simply means that the photo was taken while she was doing something else and not posing for the camera. The photo lighting could have been slightly better, as the lighting in the background was very warm, and gives the effect that the entire photo is yellow. However, it is easily seen where the light is coming from, as there is light on the subject's left side of the face, and shadow on the right side. Lighting is very important, and can also create certain effects. Although the lighting is somewhat poor, the camera lens focused on the subject, and the effect of a candid shot was successful as the subject was not aware that her photo was taken. Therefore, I believe that this is my best photo as it is not an easy task to take a photo where the subject is completely oblivious to the camera.
The meaning behind this photo is to show that our society is constantly attatched to our phones. Wherever we are, we are compelled to check our phones for updates and messages. This action is especially true for high school students, as our lives always contain a social and a school part. As a result, phones are important because they can update us with our friends' lives, as well as school projects and assignments. This candid photo shows that whenever students have time, we take out our phones, and our lives possibly revolve around technology.

WORST
BODY PART
Shutter Priority
ISO: 6400
Aperture: 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/80
I think that this was my worst photo, as the close-up shot is not completely focused. It is easy to see that it is the subject's eye, but it is not as clear as my other photos. Other body parts, such as the nose and some hair is also visible. I found that it is very difficult to take such a close-up photo without using macro-mode because the lens is unable to focus at such a close distance. The lighting in this photo also could've been better because it is slightly dark, and shadows can be seen from the glasses and objects that are out of frame.
This photo was taken of the subject's eye, as something as simple as this can create a lot of meaning. It is also easy to see which body part it is, compared to a close-up of an elbow or arm, as it is not always easy to tell what the body part is. In the arts, an eye is usually used to symbolize that it can see everything, and can be more powerful than a camera. Like a camera, it has a visual function, and can focus on objects that are at different distances. However, unlike a camera, it is constantly moving, taking photos, memories, and recording moments. A camera is only able to snap a photo at a specific fraction of a second. In some ways, the eye is more precious than a camera, as it is certainly more fragile that a machine. But it is absolutely amazing how something natural and so much more delicate can be just as powerful as a man-made machine. I feel that this photo is very meaningful, as it can represent all of our lives, where we've all seen things that make us laugh, cry, cringe in pain, or proud of our accomplishments. Overall, although I think that is was my worst photo in terms of strategy and technique, I think that it is also one of the photos that have a lot of meaning behind it.

FAVOURITE

Out of all the portraits that I took, this is one of my favourites. I am very proud of the timing and lighting, as it is not always easy to capture a smile while the subject is looking off camera. The subject is laughing at something that her friend said, and I managed to capture the moment perfectly, while she is still in focus, with the surroundings properly lit. Although this type of photo is commonly seen, where the subject is laughing while looking elsewhere, it is not understood how difficult is actually is until you are actually the photographer. Sometimes, the photos I try to take of these scenarios are poorly lit or off-focus. This photo was not even taken in one shot. She laughed multiple times at many things, and I was unprepared, whether my camera was down or I simply could not get her face focused. When I finally got this photo, I was very proud and satisfied with the results, as it turned out exactly how I imagined it.
As I mentioned earlier, this type of photo is always seen, whether it is someone's profile picture, in a magazine, or even on a website. But I think that these are one of the most beautiful photos. A smile can say a lot, especially when it is captured in a photo, at that precise moment. We can all relate to the moments that made us smile, laugh, or cry in happiness. A smile can make someone else smile, and laughter is contagious. Happiness is so important in life, and this photo has a lot of meaning to me, as I have always enjoyed making people laugh, and seeing others smile. Therefore, this photo is definitely one of my favourites, and I am very pleased that I was able to capture the subject's smile in such a small fraction of a second.
